A Dancing Debut at the Hispanic Heritage Month Concert

On October 8th, students, faculty and parents alike flooded the auditorium to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with Brooklyn Arts’s annual concert.

In years past, this concert consisted of solely instrumental majors and vocal students performing. However, October 8th’s concert featured a debut performance of the Brooklyn Arts Dance Ensemble. With just two weeks to prepare, the Dance Ensemble raced against the clock to deliver a beautiful performance captivating every single member of the audience. This piece was titled ‘Meetings Along the Edge’ by Hispanic choreographer, Pedro Ruiz. Dance Ensemble manager Emeliana Cecutti says the dance was an “extremely technical”  contemporary ballet fusion incorporating elements of Ruiz’s Hispanic roots. Ariah Cobb, a member of the ensemble, was dressed in deep red and says she worked with her ensemble members to “portray Hispanic culture through the lens of contemporary ballet.” Cecutti says of the dance, “this was an amazing piece to have as [the Brooklyn Arts] Dance Ensemble’s debut, and we are excited to show what’s in the works for BHSA!”

Personally, I was very moved by this performance, from the technicality to the facial expressions. With such a short time to master this five minute piece, I was especially impressed with the outcome and I can’t wait to see what else the Brooklyn Arts Dance Ensemble has in store.
