Is It Strange?

I’m grateful for my friends

The way we laugh together

Their smiles feel like sunny weather

But is it strange?

That I’m just as grateful for when we fight?

When we just can’t agree,

And their words sting like a bee?

I’m grateful to live in New York

The city that never sleeps

The art, the people, the eats

But is it strange?

That I’m just as grateful for leaving home?

That my family lives oceans away,

And I miss them everyday?

I’m grateful to go to school

Many women don’t the opportunity

And I get to have this community

But is it strange?

That I’m just as grateful for the impossible tests?

When I just don’t get math,

And I feel my teacher’s wrath?

So I raise a toast

To delayed trains

To t-shirts stains

To when it rains

Thank you to the bad

I’m grateful for you too

Because you’ve taught me some lessons

That the good things just couldn’t do
