On December 17th, the BHSA choirs and bands spread holiday cheer through the Winter Concert. I was able to experience the full range of skills and a great variety from both vocal and instrumental performances. The show consisted mostly of Freshman and Sophomore performances, except for the Jazz Band. The first performance was from the choir, and they sang a few holiday-themed songs, my favorite of which was “I shall not Live in Vain,” because of the passion with which it was performed. The song was adapted from a poem of the American author, Emily Dickinson, and is based on the importance of simple acts of kindness. Next, the orchestra performed “Rondeau” and “My Favorite Things.” 

The Concert Band followed with “Ukrainian Bell Carol,” “Ding Dong Merrily On High,” “Jingle Bells,” and a crowd favorite, “Santa the Barbarian.” The crowd seemed to respond to this song in particular with great excitement due to the story told by Principal Vecchiano at the beginning of the song. 

To conclude the concert, the Jazz Band, which included students from all grades, performed many songs, some of which included impressive student solos. These performances were incredible and really showcased how talented all of the instrumental students are, especially some of them who had only picked up the instrument they were playing at the beginning of the school year. 

Overall, the Winter Concert was extremely impressive, and The West Wing encourages students to go support their peers at their next concert in the Spring from May 20-21.
